The Valley of the Mists Abounds with Activities for the Whole Family
Find yourself in the beautiful countryside within an easy drive or train ride (40 minutes) of the main city of Tuscany, Florence. Some of the most lovely lesser cities of Tuscany are even closer: Lucca and Pisa. These cities are lovely with economies based mostly on tourism, where the smaller and even closer cities such as Montecatini Terme, Pistoia and Pescia, rich in art and history, bring you closer to real Tuscan life and culture.
Montecatini and Monsummmano, the closest towns, have been known for their hot springs since antiquity and were developed during the last half of the 1700s as destinations for nobility to enjoy the waters for their health.
Montecatini Alto, the original village in the area is reached from Montecatini Terme on the oldest funicular in the world. Your destination is a classic medieval fortified town with defensive walls, a wealth of 25 towers, church, convent and a piazza with restaurants. A great outing.
Small museums abound in the area. Consider a brief museum visit in one of the little villages, followed by a nice lunch in the piazza. The contemporary art museum in Monsumano offers a collection that includes Pietro Annigoni. Several small museums such as the History of Farming, Territorial Museum, Paper Museums, Castle and Archaeology Museum of Larciano, the Museum Natural Science and Archaeology of Pescia, the Museum of Religious Art in Massa and the Open-air Museum of Serravalle Pistoiese all give you a chance for brief and interesting visits in the little towns in the Valley of the Mists.
The town of Collodi, home of Pinocchio, is a short drive where there is a cheerful park with loads of great and amusing art and activities for the whole family, puppet shows, a butterfly house and nearby a classic and monumental villa and garden that is impressive for fountains and gardens, the Garzoni gardens.
