Matilde

2 Bedrooms 2 Bathrooms Sleeps 4 Florence

A fine apartment in one of the finest neighborhoods in the center of Florence. Find yourself in the middle of Florentine history with all the famous sites within in walking distance. This classic Florentine palazzo built in 1733 faces Piazza Santa Trinita with the famous church by that name.

Location

The nearby church is one of the most beautiful in Florence and famous frescoes by Ghirlandaio of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Nativity and the Madonna.

Via Tornabuoni the traffic-free designer shopping street leads into the famous Florentine sights and a block south is the beautiful Arno river. Across the piazza is Palazzo Salimbeni with its dramatic stories. First of the architecture derided at the time and later celebrated who placed the motto above the door by the architect Carpere promptius quam imitari, "Criticizing is easier than imitating". And then the symbol of the owner's family of three poppies and the motto Per non dormire. "By not sleeping." refers to the dramatic family story of an ancestor getting ahead of competitors in an important business transaction by inviting them to a dinner laced with opium from poppies.

Interior

This home in Florence is organized comfortably with fine furniture and antiques that echo the storied history of Italy. Flat screen television mounted on the wall. The leather living room furniture is made of fine Tuscan leather finished with the processes that deliver the fine leather jackets and purses that delight you into nearby stores.

We enjoy the traditional marble and tiled floors and charming tiling in the bathrooms.

The apartment shares a terrace with adjoining Lucrezia that overlooks the adjoining church. It is the perfect place to enjoy an espresso or a glass of wine.

The nice, small kitchen has an induction stove top, under-counter refrigerator, dishwasher and the dishes, pots and pans for you to prepare your meals. Between the kitchen and living room find a dining table for four in a space with french doors that open onto a space that faces the church. It is a "juliet balcony" so you can't step out but can open up for light and air.

The master bedroom is full of light. It has double french doors that open to the area facing the church, as with the dining area, you can't step out, but enjoy light and air. Large antique armoire.

The second bedroom window overlooks via del Parione.

A large closet contains a washer/dryer and ironing board.

For larger groups we suggest renting the Matlide apartment in conjunction with the Lucrezia apartment across the hall.

Great location!

by Stephen Bushkuhl

You can’t beat the location of the Matilde apartment. So central to everything yet serene and quiet at night. The bedrooms are spacious. The living area is tight for 4 people and the kitchen is very small. We were there for a week and the lack of a gathering area started to be an issue. Don’t think it would be a big deal for a few nights.

Excellent apartment in Firenze!

by Richard Fiddler

This apartment worked very well for our group of four. The location is central but quiet. The apartment is very clean and well-maintained. The kitchen is small but works fine for small meals. We very much enjoyed our stay.

Things to See & Do

Piazza della Repubblica (4 mins Walking)
A great piazza of Florence. The shape reflects its role as the forum in Roman times. Now it has fine palaces and a triumphal arch and colonnaded sidewalks. You will see street artists, impromptu musical performances and a colorful merry-go-round. Glitterati in the fancy cafes.
Ponte Vecchio (4 mins Walking)
Awesome ancient bridge over Florence's Arno river that has survived 800 years. Famous for the shops of goldsmiths along its length.
Uffizi Gallery (6 mins Walking)
One of the greatest museums in the world. The defining collection of Renaissance art. A tour is recommended.
Pitti Palace (7 mins Walking)
The famous Medici family's home, it is a large museum with many fascinating galleries. It opens to the large Boboli gardens that may be visited separately. I the origin of the Vasari Corridor, an enclosed, protective "bridge" between the palace and the Medici offices at the Uffizi.
Accademia (8 mins Walking)
Home of the original David by Michelangelo, his dramatic Bound Slaves and a very nice museum.
Duomo (9 mins Walking)
Florence's famous and glorious cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, beautiful to gaze at since the 1300s. Don't miss and, if you can, read about -- then visit the amazing dome by Brunelleschi erected without scaffolding!
Boboli Gardens (19 mins Walking)
Expansive and beautiful gardens behind the famous Pitti Palace with statues including the fat man (Bacchus) on the turtle.
