Florence's skyline much as it has appeared for more than 500 years -- beckoning with timeless landmarks.

The top floor position of this cute, apartment yields lots of light with views over the rooftops of Florence. Situated in the historic center, you can easily walk to all the sites.

This is a cheerful, pleasant apartment.

Location

Located near Piazza San Lorenzo it`s an easy walk to the Duomo, the train station, the Church of San Lorenzo and Medici Chapels. The Mercato Centrale nearby offers vast varieties of Italian food specialities and restaurants.

This is a very central location so you can be back "home" within a matter of minutes from most of the historic center sites. The neighborhood has many convenient shops, there is a small supermarket within 2 blocks, a mom-and-pop style grocers, a pizzeria, several restaurants, a pharmacy and a bakery with one block. We always have a meal at the restaurant on this block when we are in Florence.

Exterior

The building is small with only two apartments per floor and has a newly renovated exterior facade.

Interior

The building dates back to the 15th century; the stone stairwell steps that have been well used for centuries. It`s not an impressive entrance; there are no architectural details or adornments but the location is marvelous for exploring Florence and the apartment is a delight.

The apartment is fresh and up-to-date. A special feature that delights us are the nice views from the windows in the living room and bedroom. Gaze out at timeless views of the distant hills that surround Florence. It`s a bright, pleasant apartment.

A comfy sofa and two arm chairs provide comfortable seating for four people. A pull-down Murphy bed in the living room folds up flat into the wall. The living room has a door that can be closed, creating a private space when the Murphy bed is in use, thus guests in the bedroom can get up and move about the apartment without waking up those who are sleeping in the bedroom.

In the bedroom a large armoire provides good clothing storage space. Here too you can enjoy views across rooftops towards the hills.

The bathroom is acessed outside the bedroom, convenient if guests are sleeping in the living room. The shower stall is standard Italian size, but a bit small by U.S. standards. Plenty of natural light too from the window as well as good lighting over the medicine cabinet mirror.

The eat-in kitchen is fully equipped.

The house was one of the warmest we've been to whilst travelling throughout the north of Italy during winter. It was also clean and well appointed. It is quaint and close to the main train and bus stations. We loved how it was situated, in a place that was easy to walk to all the main attractions in Florence. There was more than one supermarket less than 5 minutes away by foot. It was a little bit small for a family of four and, with the apartment being on the third floor, it isn't too practical if you are travelling with large suitcases. Frankly, though, apart from this it was a very pleasant stay. Sharon and Chiara both saw to it that we were well accommodated both, before arriving and that we enjoyed our vacation as we were leaving.

Had the most wonderful stay at the Solare during my 4 weeks in Florence. I could not have asked for a better location, with amazing local wonderful restaurants right at my doorsteps. The host was incredible and very accommodating, which made my stay that much more enjoyable. She was knowledgeable, kind, and always available, from allowing me to drop-off my suitcases early in the morning before the check-in time, to always being available if I should have any questions or ever needed anything. The apartment itself was perfect, and felt like my home away from home. It was a wonderful reprieve to come home to after a long day in beautiful Florence. Thank you again to the beautiful Solare apartment and it's wonderful host, and to Italy Perfect for making it so easy to find a perfect apartment for my stay in Florence.[Thank you so much for your kind review, we are delighted you enjoyed staying at the Solare and hope to welcome you again! My stay at the Solare apartment in Florence was spectacular. I was there for a 6 week artist's workshop, so a lengthier stay. My flight was delayed by almost 12 hours, and I got to the apartment close to midnight. Chiara, my host, was so sweet and accommodating despite everything! The apartment is beautiful, clean, cozy and well kept. It made my stay extra special to come home to such a great place every evening during my long days of study! Thanks Italy Perfect, and thank you to such a fabulous host! [Thank you so much, we are pleased you enjoyed staying at the Solare! The Italy Perfect Team]

We have always stayed in hotels while in Europe, but never again! We were thoroughly impressed with Italy Perfect, the Solare apartment and our host, Chiara. The information that was sent to us before the trip was exactly what we needed to prepare for our vacation in Florence. Our flight from the USA was delayed, so we had to coordinate a later meeting time with Chiara. She was cheerful and accommodating and she made us feel right at home. The place was extremely clean and had everything we needed...laundry detergent, shampoo, bath gel, salt and pepper, sugar, olive oil, even Italian and American coffee. We were planning on a trip to the grocery store upon arrival but we skipped it since we had everything we needed. The location at San Lorenzo was perfect for walking to all the sites we hoped to visit. We never had to rely on a taxi or bus. Even though we walked all day, the stairs to the apartment weren’t a problem. There were plenty of stores and restaurants in the neighborhood for provisions and meals. The central market was only a few minutes from our door. Open windows allowed breezes to keep us cool, but when it got hot later in the week, the air conditioners and fans did the trick. This was my third trip to Florence and I hope to return someday. If I do, I’ll be sure to rent through Italy Perfect again and hopefully the Solare apartment will be available.

The Solare apartment is airy and light, with plenty of space; it's certainly not huge, but it doesn't feel at all claustrophobic. It has obviously been set up with a great deal of thought and care, and with good-quality fittings. Our hostess was very welcoming and friendly, and as well as a basket of wine, biscuits and pasta had provided kitchen basics such as salt, pepper, oil, tea, coffee and so on (the things you really don't want to have to go out and buy if you are there for only a few days, as we were). The location is excellent: it took us about 10 minutes to walk there from the station, and it is close to all the big sights (so when the hordes of tourists get too much, it's easy to go 'home' and escape the crush for a while). We enjoyed dining in Cafaggi (and not just because it is conveniently located, practically next door), and also went a little further afield to the Trattoria Pallottino, very traditional with excellent food - but we also cooked in the kitchen, which is well set-up and even has a dishwasher. We bought the ingredients in the nearby central markets, good not only for food shopping but for a wide range of casual eating upstairs. There are also supermarkets and other food shops (indeed, shops of all kinds) nearby. All up, this is a really pleasant place to stay in Florence and highly recommended.[Thank you very much Alice for your review, we are glad you enjoyed your stay! The Itlay Perfect Team]

The apt is an easy walk (10 minute) from SM train station. It is also a great location to see all the tourist sites in Florence. Lots of restaurants and coffee shops are just steps away. Our hostess, Chiara was super friendly. She showed us around the apt.and gave us local information. Also included was an Italian cell phone to use for local calls and to call her for any questions or assistance. The apt was nicely appointed and clean. There was a lovely bottle of red and some munchies welcoming us when we arrived.

We loved Chiara's apartment. Even though we had a flight delay and arrived quite late on our arrival date, Chiara cheerfully greeted us, and showed us how to use all the appliances, where everything was located in the apartment, etc. The basket of goodies that Chiara gave us, especially the bottle of wine, was greatly appreciated. The information book Chiara provided was detailed and had lots of info about the sites, restaurants and Mass times in Florence--lots of helpful information. The apartment was clean and the bed comfy, and, even though we didn't cook, the kitchen had everything you would need if you wanted to cook meals. We loved the location--very close to the Central Market, the Duomo--we could easily walk to the Florence museums and other sites. We would definitely stay in this apartment again.

My husband and I spent 5 nights in this apartment in May and could not have been happier. It's ideally located within easy walking distance of all the major sights and train station. There are lots of good restaurants, bars, coffee shops and gift shops in the surrounding few blocks. The large and comfortable bed with plenty of pillows was nice to come home to at night. Kitchen was well stocked and the owner, Chiara, even left wine, pasta, sauce, cheese and cookies for us! She greeted us warmly and showed us how everything worked in addition to giving us a book which she had compiled which would answer many questions we might have during the visit, as well as suggesting sights, activities and restaurants. She arranged for the cab the night before our departure and it was at our door promptly at 7AM the next morning. We had a wonderful time at in every respect and would definitely stay here again if we return. Thanks for everything, Chiara!

Our accommodations were wonderful! Not only did we have a great location, close to the train, Duomo, and other sites, but the laundry room was stocked with laundry detergent. This was a welcome surprise. After over a week traveling in other parts of Italy, we were ready for something different for dinner. We found a lovely Indian Restaurant, Royale India Ristorante at Via Guelfa 90/R. The chicken and lamb were so tender, better than some of the places we'd eaten in London. This property was listed on Home Away and administered by Italy Perfect. Italy Perfect requires the tenant to do more than what we're accustomed to with other Home Away rentals. Providing copies of our passports and paying local hospitality taxes in cash at check in was different. The other Italian Home Away property we stayed at didn't require these. [We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay. We do advertise the apartment on HomeAway. It is important to know that presentation of your passport & payment of local hospitality tax is required by Italian law. Our properties comply with the law. If you rented elsewhere in Italy & the property didn't charge you any hospitality tax or obtain your passport information it is likely an illegal rental. The Italian authorities are cracking down on tax avoiders, you might want to bring that to HomeAway's attention. - The Italy Perfect Team]

I found the bed comfortable and the living areas relaxing. The kitchen is very nice and has most everything to cook with. I appreciated the basket of goodies! We enjoyed the exercise a few times a day going up and down those stairs - really - we were in great shape at the end of 4 days. First impression is the stairs - all four stories of them. We were advised of this condition so it was no surprise but if you are frail or physically restricted you should be aware of this issue. Apartment is in a safe but not "showy" neighborhood and street below is narrow but not noisy. We liked the location - very close to Academia, Central Market, 10 minute walk to Duomo. Interior is clean, well-lit, well equipped and very adequate for two people. Bed is high quality and comfortable. Greeter, Chiara, was on time, friendly, spoke good English, and really seemed to care about our needs and stay. On the down-side a major renovation is taking on the apartment directly abutting Solare. Many, many times we were awoken (early) to the sound of a roto-hammer blasting away on the common wall between the apartments. The first night a VERY loud alarm went off at 4 am and did not stop until around 7 am. It was impossible to sleep during this time. Chiara did everything possible to remedy the situation but it was part of the reconstruction crew's set up and no one could be found until the workers showed up for work. On re-reading my comments there is a negative over-tone but other than the construction issues it is a good place to stay while in Florence, well priced, clean, sunny with a caring landlord. If we were assured that the construction project had been completed we would stay there again. Dick W [Thank you Dick, we are pleased you enjoyed your stay and are very sorry about the construction! The apartment Solare really was perfect for us. Yes, there are more than 60 steps up to the apartment (4th floor American) and the first time with luggage was not easy, but after that it was a breeze. We are a couple in our 60's, in good shape, so the stairs were not a problem. And once we were in the apartment, it was a haven and a home. There are many windows which we would throw open to catch the breezes and the light. The kitchen had a window with a table by which we sat for meals so it was cool and lovely despite the hots days (September). The kitchen was well-equipped and had everything we needed. Just enough pots and pans, an American coffee maker and an espresso coffee maker (stovetop), a toaster, refrigerator, 4 burner cooktop and an oven. I think there was a microwave, but we didn't use it.The living room had a very comfortable sofa, two chairs and a table. This room looked out onto the street. There was also a TV with satellite and some English channels. It was a very comfortalbe and homey room. There was also a Murphy bed which we did not use. The bedroom had a large bed for two (a king, I think). There were very nice sheets, plenty of pillows and plenty of blankets if we had needed them. The room looked out onto the street, but the windows were double-glazed so it was very quiet at night. There was a large armoir which fit all of our clothes nicely (2 people). The bathroom was modern and had everything we needed. No tub, but the shower was excellent. Water pressure was good. Apaartment Solare could not have been nicer. There was also a washing machine and a drying rack. There was air conditioning in the bedroom and the living room which we needed only at night. There is also heat available in the colder months. The owner explained how everything worked. She also stocked the apartment with basic needs which really made our stay more pleasant. The location of Apartment Solare was a ten minute walk from the train station and a 5 minute walk to San Lorenzo. Just a 3 minute walk brought us to the Central Market where there were good restaurants and lots of fresh food vendors. The major sites are 10-15 minutes walk away. The street that the apartment is on was a pedestrian street most of the time and had a few restaurants. There were three grocery stores within 8 minutes walk. We loved the location and felt very safe. The restaurant just below the apartment (Caffe il Sole) looked good for breakfast. We had coffee there one day. There is a bakery on the corner (Vecchio Forno) where we bought yummy treats for dessert and breakfast. The three grocery stores we used were all on via de' Ginori which we would take on the way back from the major sites so it was convenient to pick up groceries on the way home. One of our best meals was at Vecchio Mercato near the Central Market. The service was excellent and the food was delicious.Tip: The washing machine in the apartment, like many washing machines in Europe, is small by American standards. There is no dryer, so you will air dry any washing on the drying rack which is provided. There was a laundromat nearby if you need to do a large load and/or want to get the clothes dried. I would absolutely recommend Italy Perfect. They did a wonderful job prior to our trip keeping us informed. They send lots of really helpful information and they were terrific about communicating. We didn't have any problems but I felt if we had that they and our host would have gone out of their way to solve them.

My husband and I stayed at the Solare for nine nights and couldn't have been happier. Each room is beautifully proportioned, comfortable, and nicely decorated. They also have high ceilings and large windows with views of the street and the sky and the hills in the distance--truly a delight to look out. Chiara, the owner of the property, has thought of everything to make one's stay lovely--she provides a welcome basket with wine, cheese, cookies, and more; chocolate candy at your bedside; a bowl of candy in the hallway; a fully equipped kitchen with both Italian and American coffee; comfortable linens and plush towels; plenty of closet space; and even a cellphone. She was kind enough to make arrangements for a taxi to pick us up to take us to the airport. Another great thing about the apartment is its location--it is very near to the San Lorenzo where you can view the magnificent Michelangelos at the Medici Chapel. The San Marco with the amazing Fra Angelicos is also quite close by. And so is the extraordinary art-filled Santa Maria Novella. The old marketplace is just around the corner with the most beautiful and delicious fruits, vegetables, salamis, hams, and cheeses, and upstairs there is the original "Eataly" with informal places to eat of every description, all delicious, and open until midnight 7 days a week. The next time we are in Florence we will definitely return to the Solare.

The apartment was in a fabulous location. Close to Duomo, Uffizi, markets, restaurants, coffee shops, shopping and more. We liked climbing the 66 steps so that we could burn calories, because we knew we'd have a great time eating! The little coffee shop next door to the apartment had excellent cappuccino, sandwiches, panini, foccocia, soup, American style breakfast and they opened early! While many restaurants didn't open until 7 or later for dinner, we found a few that served it earlier. We enjoyed every meal at every restaurant. I also prepared several meals during our two week stay, and the apartment kitchen was perfect for that. I found that the cotton setting on the clothes washer was the best one to use. The bed was very comfy. Everything was clean and dust-free. I purchased International cell phone minutes and it was a good thing, because I used them to navigate Florence, and I got lost a couple of times and had to call my man to rescue me. Italy Perfect helped me with planning my trip, and I must say that the trip was flawless. I was nervous about trains, transportation, currency, and everything, and their tips helped a lot.

The apartment was in an ideal location which was near where my daughter went to school and walkable to everything. The owner of the unit met me at the unit and explained everything about the unit and even left me a local cell phone to use if I needed. The unit was very clean and a good size and true to the description and pictures online. I would definitely stay again if I am lucky enough to come back

Just wanted to provide some feedback on Solare. Chiara, our hostess, was most gracious. Please send a thank you (Grazie mille) to her for making the extra effort and for making our visit with our daughter in Florence so lovely and homey. We had a small issue with water heater...no hot water for shower one morning....and I emailed her and she showed up at the door 30 minutes later and immediately had a plumber or electrician on the phone!

It is great for 1 person and again perfect for 2 people traveling together as good friends. The murphy bed in the living room makes it like a 2 bedroom suite!!! I would stay here many times over and would totally without a doubt recommend to everybody.

We thoroughly enjoyed the comfort and location of the Solare apartment in Florence! Comfortably furnished, clean, all tourist sites were easy to walk to, and the owner/greeter was wonderfully kind and helpful in every way. We found a Brazilian/Italian restaurant just across the street that was so good we ate there twice during our stay -- Paulistano opened in 2015 and we recommend it for good food and friendly service. We enjoyed working with Italy Perfect and look forward to working with them for future travels.

Solare was very nice. We were met by the owner and she left us some wine and food to get started, which was lovely. Only thing we didn't like is the bugs (mosquitos) that came in through the open windows. I like fresh air and am used to screens. Otherwise, the place was great. [We are pleased you enjoyed the apartment. Very few homes in Italy have window screens, it is just not the custom there which can be an adjustment. The Italy Perfect Team]

Great apartment, clean, perfect location and lots of start up supplies. Easy to get to all of Florence's historic sites and the train station is only 10 minutes easy walk. You can go out for a couple of hours and come back, rest and go back out. Must try the Florence steak, absolutely delicious. Chiara met us and provide with all the information we needed about the apartment and surrounding area. She was friendly and mort than willing to respond to any questions. A great find, you will not be disappointed, remember no lift.

This was our second trip to Florence as arranged by the Italy Perfect staff. As before we rented the Solare apartment thru Italy Perfect because of the location - quieter, without sacrificing access to local amenities. The apartment is very comfortable and well maintained. We enjoyed walking all over the city, includiing a trek from Fiesole back down into Florence. As before, everywhere we went we were welcomed. I am sure that our next trip to Florence will come sooner next time around. Kathleen

We stayed in Solare at the end of August and beginning September 2014. The apartment was perfect for a young family as our daughter slept in the living room which can double as a second bedroom. The welcome gift was wonderful and our daughter also got a welcome gift which was a wonderful surprise. As well, the owner of the apartment was able to babysit our daughter twice in the evening which was perfect as we could go out with friends in the evening. Overall, the accommodations lived to our expectations.

My wife and I were more than pleased with the Solare apartment in Florence during our recent visit over New Year's. Beginning with the reception from our host who met us on time and provided excellent directions on everything in the apartment from how the stove and dishwasher worked to adjusting the thermostats if we needed some additional heat. Our host made herself available through the week and even provided a cell phone for us to use should we need to contact her. As well the apartment itself was well equipped with ample cooking utensils and dishes. There were had more entertainment options (i.e. TV, DVD player, stereo) than we could use and most importantly a very comfortable bed to sleep in after long days of walking. The location could not have been better, close to the market, train station, Duomo, and the Academia. A reasonably quiet neighbourhood yet very close to all the sites and an easy walk to everywhere. We would certainly look to use the apartment again when we are back in Florence. Finally dealing with Italy Perfect has been a very successful experience. Upon completing our booking we received the most comprehensive package of information and suggestions that we had have seen in many years of travelling and renting apartments. In addition when we asked for a restaurant recommend for New Years dinner we were sent list with comments and we selected the restaurant they thought was best and enjoyed a spectacular meal. Well done Italy Perfect. We would highly recomend Italy Perfect and the Solare apartment.

The Solare apartment near the Academie is great. The location for seeing all in Florence on foot is ideal. Once you get over the dark and drab entrance staircase, the apartment will suit your needs. It is well equiped with modern conveniences and well maintained. We enoyed the bakery on the corners for picking up breakfast each day. if you stay off the main tourist squares the restaurants in Florence are fantastic, salades expecially fresh. The ones in the squares are fine for people watching. The central market is close by for those that wish to cook in. I would recommend the unit to anyone for a complete unit for a a few days or week in Florence. We arrived by car, but the train station is walkable as well.

We enjoyed a great week at this apartment in September 2014. We received a friendly, professional welcome from the owner. It was apparent that she had excelled herself in lots of little touches around the apartment which was cosy, spotlessly clean and very well furnished in a very classy and tasteful manner. We found the immediate surroundings to be safe and homely and were delighted at how close we were to the central attractions. Despite being so close, the actual street below the apartment was not a busy one and we felt sheltered from the main city noise. Sleep is important to us on holiday and we enjoyed seven good nights sleep. The air-conditioning was excellent and the windows in the bedroom had extra internal shutters for added quiet at night. There is an excellent bakers literally seconds from the front door where we bought our breakfast pastries and bread rolls for lunch. The apartment was a couple of minutes away from the Market Central with its wonderful, modern, upper food hall. Having stayed in apartments in Rome, Venice and elsewhere, this was very much up with the best. We have no hesitation in recommending this apartment to couples wishing a romantic break or to visitors wishing to be close to all the major attractions. We hope to be back in the near future. 10 out of 10.

We totally enjoyed our stay at Solare and can't think of one negative thing to say about the property. First, we loved the location. We drove into Florence and were able to park our car in a garage just around the corner, very convenient. The central market was a highlight of Florence for us and it too is only a two block walk away. Being able to stop by there and pick up the most beautiful vegetables, fresh pasta and meats or fish was such a treat. Plus if you are not a cook there are great restaurants literally a stone's throw away. The owner must be a designer because the her home was charming, spotless, very well appointed and extremely comfortable. I felt like I was staying in a close friend's home. She had provided us with enough groceries to fix a meal the first night there. Don't be concerned about the stairs unless you normally never take stairs. I am in my 60's and didn't have a problem at all. On our next trip to Florence, we will definitely stay here. Thanks to the owner for such a lovely stay.

While a fourth floor walk-up, I enjoyed the exercise. One important note, to conserve energy, the hallway lights are on timers. The only issue for me was bringing my luggage down with the lights turning off halfway down. Bring a flashlight to allow enough time! The apartment itself was perfect for one person. With a whole month to explore the area, I found this place to be conveniently located. Chiara, also, was charming and responsive for anything that came up on a timely basis. The apartment provided all the necessary items and the murphy bed was comfortable for my friend who arrived a couple of weeks later. The only minor inconvenience is the step in the bathroom. After a couple of days, it became second nature but you do have to pay attention. If I return to Florence, I would not hesitate to stay in this lovely apartment. The restaurant at street level was a great local find, with many Italian academic types who frequent it. My favorite restaurant was Le Fonticine on the other side of Mercato Central. Ask for super Mario the waiter and enjoy the florentine steak. This was my first visit to Italy and I enjoyed the adventure of exploring the city and the region in general.

The Solare apartment was the most comfortable place we stayed during our three week visit to Italy. Our greeter was so friendly, accommodating and helpful that it made our first visit to Florence relaxing and stress free. We certainly got our daily exercise climbing the three flights of stairs! The location was convenient with the Galleria dell'Accademia just two blocks away. If you see nothing else in Florence, you must see Michelangelo's David. Also, visit the house where Michelangelo once lived which is now Museo di Casa Buonarroti. If you go left from the apartment headed towards Mercado Centrale, the neighborhood a little dicey. However, Trattoria ZaZa is nearby in that area which is a good place for lunch, light snack or dinner. If you go left from the apartment, the neighborhood is definitely more upscale, especially Via Cavour going south towards the Duomo. For the best view and food in Florence, located next to the Arno River, overlooking Ponte Vecchio go to The Golden View. They have a variety of restaurants: formal dining, seafood, bar with jazz and a casual space for light breakfast and snacks. Italy Perfect is terrific!

The place was comfortable with lots of light. The living room overlooks rooftops with hills in the background. The location was great. We walked to everything. There was an Information Center nearby; a grocery store around the corner that had everything we needed. The Mercato Centrale was only a few blocks away. There was some street sound, but it felt atmospheric. When the windows were closed, we couldn't hear anything. It was hot, so we closed the windows to run the air conditioners, which worked perfectly. In fact, everything worked perfectly. The wifi connection was excellent. I slept on the Murphy's bed, which was very comfortable and easy to get up and down. The water pressure is good in the shower with plenty of hot water. There's lots of light in the bathroom. The owner was wonderful-so easy to work with and friendly. She was outside waiting for us when we arrived. She takes the extra steps to make the place special-such as a welcome basket with a bottle of wine. She provided coffee. There's a toaster. We had espresso and toast every morning. (We bought whole wheat bread from the Mercato Centrale.) She has a binder with all the info one might need, including instructions on how to use everything. She provides a loaner phone with all the numbers one might need. She's there for you if you need her. We stayed five nights and everything went so smooth that we never had to contact her. We thought the stairs we're pretty easy to climb. The two-minute timer on the light is plenty of time to get upstairs, unless you have trouble with your key. (We had some trouble with our keys, but always got in. The one time the light went out on us, Chiara had provided a key with a flashlight, so even then we got in.) We took the train. If you trust the directions provided, you'll easily walk to the apartment in 15 minutes. We booked through Italy Perfect. They take the extra steps to make sure one's trip is easy and memorable.

Solare was the perfect location for our first visit to Florence. After recovering from the 66 stairs with our luggage, everything else was a breeze. Our greeter kindly showed us how everything in the apartment worked and even left us a mobile phone to use! The street outside the apartment is a bit gritty, but it's close to everything, and the market just down the street has everything you need from fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and fresh pasta to wine, allowing guests to make full use of the well-equipped kitchen. Once the outer shutters are closed and the AC is turned on, the apartment is peaceful and quiet, despite the often boisterous activities in the streets below in this densely populated area near the university. Solare is a real gem and a great bargain in a perfect location for exploring Florence.

We spent 2 weeks in Italy and without a doubt, the highlight of our trip was the stay in the Solare apartment. Not only is the apartment centrally located to the train station and walking distance from any of the major sights, but it is on a quiet street with a lovely view of the Tuscan mountains in the distance. It gets a lovely breeze when you open the windows, and you can hear the church bells ringing. While the 66 step climb may deter some, we found it invigorating and not at all a problem. The owner Chiara greeted us with a personal walk through and left a lovely basket with wine and pasta and biscotti for us that proved really useful when we came home from a long day of travels during our stay. She provided maps and information about buses and even called a taxi for us the day we were leaving. It was nice to know she was available if we needed anything. The wireless was flawless. The murphy bed was easy to use and very comfortable. The laundry facilities worked great (you line dry as with most places). Even more importantly, we felt the whole experience in renting through Italy Perfect to be a breeze and we had the chance to ask a lot of questions of our contact, Lisa, who was very helpful about non-apartment info even like whether to rent a car or not to visit Parma, etc. Very professional, very timely responses, it was just a seamless and trustworthy organization. So not only do we highly recommend this particular apartment (where we hope to return one day!) but Italy Perfect in general is a class operation. Thank you for helping make for a memorable trip to Florence.

Overall, we had a good experience with this apartment, aside from the laundry issue and having to climb so many stairs. The apartment is very convenient to the city center. The Duomo, Mercate Central, and other attractions are just a short walk away. The Centro Market is half a block away on Via De Ginori and has everything you need. Small storefronts nearby also have soda, beer, wine, milk, and groceries when you need them. The train station (Santa Maria Novella) is a 15-minute walk. We found an excellent brewpub on Nazionale called Mostodolce. Good burgers and pub food. Also plenty of house brews. Excellent pizza at La Dantesca near the train station, and inexpensive as well. The little cafe downstairs has good deals on food; she opens early and is closed by 9 PM. You will find real values when shopping for fresh food, bread, and wine at the Mercate Central. Even the refrigerated pasta (made fresh) at Centro is outstanding. We never had a bad meal in Florence. Ditto Sienna and Lucca, the Cinque Terre, and Venice. One tip - avoid buying meals and gelato near the Ponte Vecchio, as you will pay much higher prices in this touristy area. The Solare apartment is up 66 steps on the fourth floor. A bit of a challenge for those with physical disabilities, as there is no elevator. [That is why we provide so much detail on the website: the exact number of stairs, that there is no elevator, that it is not recommended for people with disabilities. We are sorry you somehow overlooked this information which is so clearly stated in much detail multiple times on the website. - Italy Perfect] Accommodations were basic; the mattress was quite hard (not uncommon in Europe). We doubled it up with the mattress from the Murphy bed. [We have since added a memory foam mattress topper. - Italy Perfect] The air conditioning worked very well in the bedroom (useful for keeping the room quiet at night), not as well in the living room. The kitchen is well appointed, although small. You don't have a lot of room to maneuver if more than one person is preparing a meal. It was convenient to have a clothes washer. But you will need to set up drying racks (they take up a lot of room) and the two clotheslines outside the kitchen aren't very long. The spin cycle in the washer didn't work correctly; we had to wring out clothes in the shower before drying them. Mosquitoes and biting flies were a problem with the windows open at night. The plug-in repellents seem to work very well, I highly recommend buying one during mosquito season.

I was in Italy alone for three weeks taking a painting course and the Solare was a perfect fit for me. Not too big, not too small. Chiara was very helpful upon arrival and answered all e-mail questions promptly. The apartment is in a great location, walking distance to everything, but removed just enough to be out of the tourist crowds that you feel like a local. The walk up the stairs is not a problem at all as you do so much walking in Florence you get in good shape, but the hallways could be nicer. The street has a drug store, bakery, grocery store, wine, pizza, and chocolate shops, and the central market is two blocks away! The best restaurant by far was right downstairs, Cafaggi (sp?) Don't be put off by the closed curtains, it is a great family run place with excellent service and food. Also very nice was Giannino in San Lorenzo on Via Borgo San Lorenzo. It is the one with the yellow "Ristorante" sign on the main street from the Duomo to the apartment. I would avoid ZaZa, it was a noisy tourist trap.

Go out for a walk at any hour to see the sites in a variety of light and weather conditions. A foggy night makes everything magical! Some of our favorites were the Duomo museum-buy the combo ticket-- tour the museum, climb the campanile and enter the baptistery. Restaurant faves were Acqua al 2,Trattoria Osteria da quèGanzi, Gusta Pizza. Shop the mercato centrale-buy freshly made pasta, vegetables, bread and cook in the fully equipped kitchen! We spent 8 nights at Solare and were very comfortable. We especially liked staying in the residential area, but very close to all the tourist sights. Every amenity that you would need is close by, grocery store, bank, pharmacy, restaurants, bars, Market, gelato, and everyone is very friendly. The apt is very clean, and well set up. You must shop at the market and make some meals at home. Chiara met us and spent a good 30 minutes showing us how everything worked, where everything was and gave us extra information. The welcome basket is a lovely touch and very much appreciated. There was even chocolates on our night stand. This is a very well set up Rental Property and the Wi Fi Internet is very good..We were in Florence for the heat wave this August so were pleased to have the air conditioning in the bedroom and living room, which worked very well. Thanks Chiara. We took several tours with ArtViva Walking Tours of Florence and were very pleased with their guides and small groups. The Market Tour and Italian cooking lesson was so much fun. Some restaurants we enjoyed were, Ristorante Pepo, Via Rosina on the way to the Mercato Market. La Giostra Ristorante, a very nice restaurant On Borgo Pinti. Ristorante la Maremma on Via Verdi near Plaza Santa Croce. We felt very safe in this area . Italy Perfect sent us all the information we would need to stay in Florence, sight see and enjoy Italian life. My 2 adult daughters and I enjoyed 5 wonderful days in the Solare apartment. It was a 4-flight walk up...but not a big deal. The steps were not difficult. Just don't forget anything in the apartment! The location was perfect: just a couple of blocks to the Academia Gallery and a couple of blocks to the Duomo and the market centrale. It's a short walk from the train station, Santa Maria Novella. In fact, once you learn the streets, you will realize that you can walk everywhere.  Chiara (owner) was in the apartment on time and went over every detail with us. She was lovely...she gave us a gift basket with pasta, sauce, cheese, biscotti and wine! We had our first night's meal in the apartment. She gave us detergent for the washing machine. The WIFI was perfect...had absoultely no problems. She even left us a cell phone in case we needed to contact her. The murphy bed in the living room was very comfortable, as was the bed in the master bedroom. Chiara has a journal in the wall unit of the living room where everyone can write comments. The restaurant recommended by all was a place called ZaZa's which is located behind the mercato centrale. Go there! The food is fantastic, portions are large and the prices are reasonable. Across the way is a great gelato place...they make their own. Definitely go to the mercato centrale and buy fresh pasta, vegetables, etc. Cook in your apartment and taste the fantastic flavor of fresh food! We took a side trip to Siena and San Gimignano. Siena was great: wine tour, tuscan pizza, tour of the church (with a tour guide). San Gimignano was a tourist trap. Pretty shops, nothing else. Oh yes! We took a cooking course in Florence. That was fantastic. They give you the recipes and we made them for Father's Day dinner. The name of the company was La Tavola and we booked it through Viator. Wish we could have taken more courses. Have a great trip and enjoy the apartment! Gloria, Jackie & Christine

We spent 9 nights at the apartment with our two children - which worked great - buying fresh ingredients at the market and preparing dinner as a family was super. There are also multiple, small, non touristic restaurants nearby situated around the market (read the reviews in the apartment for ideas). The apartment itself is very well equipped and immaculate, the stairway is not as daunting as it might seem. We would absolutely recommend Solare and Italy Perfect. Our second stay was intentional as the first stay was so memorable.

Solare Review

My wife and I stayed at the Solare apartment for 19 days in October 2011. Overall, we could not have been more pleased. The apartment was meticulously maintained and the owner was a cordial, delightful and accomodating host. She thought of everything including maps, a looseleaf binder explaining the operation of each applicance (first rate stove, washer, dishwasher), restaurant tips, and hours of area attractions. Although we did not need to call her, we felt that if it were necessary, Chiara would have been on site within minutes. For us, the location was ideal. We intended to do quite a bit of cooking while in Florence and the proximity of the wondereful central market (5 minute walk) was a big plus. We also chose Solare because of its location near (but not too near) to the S.M.N. (main) train station and the inter-city bus depot (about 10-15 minute walk). We used Solare and Florence as a "home base" from which to take 2-day trips to other Tuscan and Umbrian cities (like Assisi and Siena) as well as day trips to places like Lucca and San Gimignano. It was no problem to pull a small overnighter from apartment to station. All of the sites and neighborhoods of Florence were within 20 minutes or less walk from Solare. Be sure to visit DaVino, the "vino sfuso" shop around the corner on the way to the market. Bring (or buy there) an empty liter bottle and they will fill it with your choice of 7-8 delicious Chianti regional wines for 3-4 euros per liter. The wine is delivered in bulk direct from the vineyards. And the owner is absolutely charming! That said, a few words of caution. If you have any heart, breathing, or physical health problems, the 4th floor location (without elevator) WILL be a problem for you, and a major one depending on how severe your condition. The steps were steep and hauling our large suitcases up at the beginning of our stay was a physical challenge. The street on which Solare is located is well trafficked and in the late evenings, especially towards the weekends, the students (the university is nearby) can be noisy and somewhat rowdy (nothing serious, but a light sleeper beware). It did not bother us but it might bother some. The building corridors are dimly lit and somewhat dingy (although the aprtment is bright, cheerful, and totally charming) so just be prepared to ignore this (Chiara provides a flashlight on the keychain because it is next to impossible to get up the steps before the timer shuts off the hall lights; this is a building issue and not the fault of Chiara). In short, there are more luxurious apartments (and more expensive!) and neighborhoods that might for some be a bit more attractive (we liked the feel of the Oltrano side of the Arno and San Niccolo neighborhood) but the combination of the nearby market and station as well as the overall central location made this a perfect choice for us and for someone who plans to use Florence as a hub for daytrip or overnight exploring of Tuscany.

My husband and I stayed in the Solare apartment for 5 nights in September. It was perfect. The owner keeps the place immaculate and well equipped. It is the only time we have stayed in a vacation rental that the owners photos actually don't convey how great the apartment is decorated and the space used. You feel like a resident of the city but as a visitor it is a great location for walking to museums, and all historical points of interest in the city center.Neighborhood markets, restaurants, bakeries all within a block or two yet the Solare offers privacy (4th floor)and comfort. The owner is terrific and very helpful.

I stayed here with my two daughters who are 11 and 15, and it worked perfectly. When we booked, Lisa was great and quick in responding. Chiara, our hostess in Florence was sweet, and great at going over the details of the apartment. Solare was very clean and well stocked to meet our needs while on holiday. Good location, short walk to all the attractions in the City centre, close to a small grocery. As noted in the property details, this is a top floor apartment, so it does have a lot of stairs, but this was not an issue for us. We did enjoy one day of shopping at the Centrale Mercati, which has lots of vendors with fresh foods and is almost just around the corner. We purchased pasta and Pesto from one of the merchants there, and had a wonderful pasta meal, probably the best Pesto I have ever had.Did also get a chance to eat at Za Za which is a very short walk, the food was excellent and service friendly. Would have no hesitation recommending Italy Perfect or Solare to anyone looking for a charming place to stay in Florence.

From the warm and cordial greeting to the cleanliness to the location, everything about the Solare apartment was perfect for us. The apartment is darling, so cute and well taken care of. We were so comfortable and happy, everything worked perfectly and was just what we had hoped for for our Florence stay. Despite the hot summer temperatures outside the Solare apartment was a cool retreat!

Solare Review

The Solare apartment was cozy and convenient for our needs. The owner Chiara was perfectly lovely and left home-warming gifts for us to enjoy. I will note that the staircase was not only four stories up but also very dark, also, because Florence is very hot in the summer, the apartment was hot in the afternoons when we came back from a long day of touring. We were very concerned about the AC overload so we tried to conserve which caused us to be somewhat uncomfortable. The apartment worked but it was not ideal. I'm sorry you didn't find the stairwell light in the downstairs entry which illuminates the stairwell. It's on a timer, by Italian law. The A/C works well, sorry you were worried about overloading the circuit. Chiara probably warned you to be careful not to overload the circuit by running two power-hungry appliances at the same time such as the A/C and washer or dishwasher or hairdryer. This is the standard practice for all Italian homes. Lisa Italy Perfect

My senior mother and I stayed at Solare in late May. It was already quite hot and we were happy with the A/C. The apt is very clean and cozy and has a well equipped kitchen - we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. I was expecting the second bed in the living room to be a fold-out couch but it turned out to be a very comfortable murphy bed with a proper mattress. So much better. Thanks to Chiara for being a wonderful hostess. She had left a gift basket, guide books and maps and there are good restaurant recommendations for the neighborhood from previous guests. The apt is in a good location - not too much street noise, fairly close to everything (we walked everywhere) and we never felt unsafe. Yes there are stairs but if you are reasonably fit and able, it is ok. My mother is 72 and managed just fine. You wouldn't want to forget something though. Of the other agenecies we looked at and another we booked with for a later leg of our trip, we found Italy Perfect to be just fabulous. They provided lots of information regarding the apt and arm guests with detailed general info about Florence/Italy and were quick to reply to any emails. Highly recommend Italy Perfect and Solare!

From the first time we met our landlord we were impressed with accomodations. We were met at the front door, taken up the stairs, and were then briefed on every aspect of the apartment and surrounding area. Great location--nice appartment--wonderful host. We had a grand time using the apartment as our base. Easy walk to the train station and all points of interest in Florence. We would return in a heartbeat and will recommend to our friends. Only drawback is the 4 flights of steps to the top--be prepared but you do get used to it.

My friend and I stayed for a week to visit my daughter at school. Solare was updated, charming and very clean. The welcome basket and information booklet really helped orient us after our long travel. The location was ideal because we could walk to every museum as well as the train/bus station. I did use the second bed which was a pull down and found it comfortable. Our greeter was sweet and helpful. I recommend looking in the guest book for restaurants because there are many tourist restaurants. The condo is on the 4th floor which helped us work off our daily gelato treat!

Great property, worked well with our family of four (2 adults, 2 children ages 8 and 2). Only drawback were the steps, could also become loud at night. Great central location for Florence and railway station for visiting other cities. La Burasca, small restaurant nearby (close to market) Owner was very pleasant and helpful. Recommended driver was also very kind and attentive.

Solare Review

by George & Gracie's Mom
Solare is the perfect choice if you want a sunny, beautifully decorated, impeccably clean, comfortable, well equipped accommodation within walking distance of just about everything you want to see and do in Florence.  The owner is a wonderfully warm, thorough and extremely helpful woman whose primary concern is that of the comfort of her guests.  She welcomed me with a generous gift basket of Tuscan "goodies" which was unexpected and sincerely appreciated.  I felt very safe here and loved the sense of being part of the neighborhood - especially visiting the little cafe next door in the morning for cappucino.  Yes, the apartment is on the top floor and making it up 4 flights of stairs at the end of a long day can be daunting but the reward at the top is worth the effort!  I would recommend Solare to anyone looking for an economical (not to mention spacious and comfortable) alternative to an expensive hotel room.  Thank you for sharing your lovely home with me, Chiara.  It was, by far, one of the best vacations I've ever had.

We found our accomodation in Florence to be of the highest standard. We were met by the oner who was charming and very helpful and surprised us by leaving lots of lovely goodies which we were certainly not expecting. We loved the fact that, being on the top floor we had lovely views over the rooftops to the Tuscan hills. Bear in mind that this is a typical Italian apartment and there is no lift, we are in our mid sixties and pretty fit but if you struggle with stairs then this apartment would not be for you! We liked the location, we were on minutes from the central market where we went to meet up with the locals and to buy some beautiful homemade Italian ready meals. There were also some very good eating places in the market area. We used local transport and the SITA buses to travel around and found it all very easy, most people spoke English and were very eager to help you. We thought the service from Italy Perfect was fantastic, whenever I e-mailed Lisa with a query she would get back to me very quickly with good advice. All in all our holiday was fantastic and we would whole heartedly recommend Italy Perfect.

If you want to feel like a local, this is the place. Solare is centrally located to many of Florence's top attractions. We had a wondeful experience in this unit. Everything you need is located nearby. It also is a very economical choice and very well maintained. The only drawback is the lack of an elevator. After a long day, the steps could be tiring. Nicely decorated. … great people watching from the windows…felt like we were locals…. welcome basket was a nice touch.

Plenty of good restaurants in the neighborhood.

A great piazza of Florence. The shape reflects its role as the forum in Roman times. Now it has fine palaces and a triumphal arch and colonnaded sidewalks. You will see street artists, impromptu musical performances and a colorful merry-go-round. Glitterati in the fancy cafes.
Via Tornabuoni (12 mins Walking)
